PM RESOURCES

SUMMARY

People ask me how to break into product management or what resources I recommend to improve on their PM skill set. Here are a few of those recommendations, along with content I consume myself on a regular basis. I will caveat this all by saying that consuming resources will never make up for the learning experience of shipping products, so I encourage you to do just that in parallel.

PRODUCT

ENGINEERING

  • Hacker News

  • Techcrunch.com

  • Techmeme.com

  • Sit down with engineers of target companies and also close friends and family members to learn about how they work with PMs

DESIGN

  • This is one of the best resources to understand new user experience: User Onboarding Teardowns

  • Use as many different products and apps on a regular basis for research and for fun - this includes apps I wouldn't normally use as a consumer.

  • Set a goal and product that you want to design, download real time board, and wireframe the user journey of the app.

  • I took this course and loved it and it gives you a high level introduction into human interaction design and how to evaluate great design

OTHER RESOURCES

  • Networking is KEY. Download the app called Shapr and schedule coffee chats to learn more about roles

  • Join the various Slack Channels such as PMHQ (Largest Slack Channel) where you can learn more about jobs, talk to experienced PMs, and deep dive into interview questions

  • One of the biggest things you can do is get experience pushing our new features/products so try to take on a product initiative at your current company or join a freelance community (Gigster) as a PM. If you're trying to break into Product don't be scared to take on a contract role to show your willingness to dive in and learn.
